week 6 reflection

      So sad!

First I feel so sad that I have to write this post very quickly in order to save time for my PLN assignment. The last week really makes me feel fatigue. I would prefer to do another project like creating an online course prototype or design an social media lesson plan instead of writing a "paper". Even though the paper only requires three pages, I still feel worried and uncertain. I wish I could have more time to do everything better :) seems like I have this feeling every week for this course. It is not because I am not serious enough for this course, but I want to dig more, learn more and explore more for each task.

Second, I feel very sad that I am going to say goodbye to this awesome class. I keep thinking if I choose to register this course in a long semester, may I have enough time and greater experience? In one hand I feel very lucky that I choose this course instead of other elective courses! In the other hand, I wish I have more time with this course!

Third, I will really miss you, Dr. Denne. I think I have met you before when I was a graduate student at FSU, but my major was sociocultural and international development education studies. I appreciate all the new tools you introduce to use. All the works you had done for us;  videos, blogs, and comments you had created for our learning outcome. You are incredibly awesome !!! You definitely lead us to a new area and open our mind to a bigger sight. I hope I can learn with you every semester!

Last, I want to hug this overwhelmed class because it gives me a lot. It keeps pushing me, encouraging me and inspiring me!

social media in k-12 settings

I did some research for the last assignment. For the whole semester, all the classmates are working very hard writing about their discovery of new technological tools. I feel I gradually lost some passion when the semester is going to the end. I still feel so excited when trying new social media tools. I enjoy exploring functions and thinking about how to incorporate those tools into my future "online course". Many people said setting a blog is a good idea to introduce educational technology in the classroom. However, I am still thinking about all the advantages a student can get. In my teaching experience, students always need guidance to reflect their learning, especially in k-12 settings. I feel writing four blogs per week in addition to a formal assignment is a lot of work for a graduate student. However, it definitely makes sense if the semester is only 6 weeks. In k-12 setting, how many blog posts are appropriate for students' language and age level? I think if we want to include a class blog, a lot of factors should be considered ahead.

In my opinion, students in k-12 setting can take turns to write "our class blog". As the result, everyone can take the responsibility and contribute their own thoughts on the class blog. In addition, I am really concerning if the "Facebook public group " and "twitter" are appropriate for students in the young age ( below 1)? Do they need parents' supervision? Do they even have a cell phone? Will those social networks distract their learning? I totally agree that using twitter and facebook are considered as a natural way promote communication. However, more concerns raise to my mind.

passive income and PLN

When I start the degree in Instructional System and Learning Technology, I was thinking about how to prepare my career in this field. And in addition to a formal portfolio, I think it will be a good practice to create an online course through Udemy. My bachelor degree is Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. I had roughly 5 years working experience in Teaching Mandarin to U.S students. Therefore, I think " learning Mandarin " should have a lot of customers.

After did some research about how to create an online course. I learn the phrase " passive income". What is "passive income"? According to Wiki, "Passive income is income resulting from cash flow received on a regular basis, requiring minimal to no effort by the recipient to maintain it". In the other words, after you set up a product and continue maintaining it, the people who consume such product will keep paying you the money. All the product is sold through the online market.

There are several ways can create passive income, for example, writing a popular blog, selling an online course, writing an ebook and so on. Among all the option, creating an online course and selling it can be a good choice that not only creates passive income but also a good practice for me.  While I am thinking about how to promote my course, I consider using Web 2.0 tools I learned from EME6414 to advocate my course. As the result, to make more people know my course, constructing a larger PLN is critical for the success.

Using social media tools in online course

As the semester almost end, I start to think where I am going and what should I prepare for the career in instructional design.

Being as an educator for roughly five years, I always try to construct a student-centered classroom to engage learners. The last assignment: produsage project really makes me to think how to convert a student-centered, face to face class into a online format. I did research, I found many good social media tools serve perfect function in engage learners and promote knowledge sharing. Among many of tools I tried, seesaw and popplet are two of the best ones.

Seesaw like a live forum that students and teachers are free to different format of information: drawings, text, pictures, videos and so on. The good part is that teachers make a collection of what students had done for the class. Moreover, all the class members can leave comments, and join the conversations with each other. Even though the Seesaw is designed as a students' portafolio saving tools, I found it is a perfect tools to use in class discussion activities.

Below are two activities I created for the produsage project:

Another great tool I used for final project called Popplet. It originally designed for organizing ideas. However, I think it can be a great tool to present learning outcome. It work perfectly when converting face-to-face poster project into online course format.
Here is the website link and a good example other people created:

If you are creating an online course, try above tools ! They are fantastic!

week 5 some thoughts :)

Another busy week.... I wish I could have 48 hours a day... My little precious is getting bigger and bigger. I enjoy every second with him!  SO  sad that my husband will leave in next week, heading back to California and continue his post doctor career. I will be myself with my two lovely boy and my parents. Even though I wish I could have a longer time with my son and my husband, I still enjoy every second I spend for this course. I found I like doing and thinking creatively.

I am so embarrassed to admit that I just start to think about the third assignment "produsage project". Time is flying and I feel I am still struggling with the subject. I have too many choices. Elementary education is the field I am familiar with but I want to try subject in higher education. Considering the time limitation, I think a better idea is to do something I am familiar with.

Second, which web.2.0 tools? There are some of them first coming to my mind: schoology ( learning management system), trello ( as the homework list)  seesaw ( digital portfolio creating tools), youtube (video sharing tool) and so on ( maybe I will use facebook public group as discussion board; voice thread as assessment tool)

Third, my philosophy should be learner-centered and project based learning. Therefore, I will try to give students the ability to complete the task with the foundational knowledge learned from the class.

Another thing I want to share is when we are discussing the social media tools in other countries. I feel very difficult to use youtube ( amazing video sharing tools) in China. We have similar video sharing tools such as Tudou. However, I feel youtube is the best because of its user-friendly feature. So sad that my country block the youtube and it makes difficult to promote a world-class community as an instructional designer.
